Useful facts that apply to all boating adventures (motor and sailboat)
CHECK THE WEATHER CONDITIONS !
The courses continue even when it rains! Only if we cannot guarantee a safe lesson (storm / severe thunderstorm) it can be rescheduled. So always check the weather forecast to determine your outfit!
- Don’t forget your sunscreen, unless you plan on rocking a lifeguard-style tanline!
- Rain gear is always handy, unless you’d rather show up on board like a drowned cat? An extra set of dry clothing is no luxury.
- Layering is always a good idea! That way you can adjust your outfit to suit both the weather and your sudden desire for a fashion statement à la sailor chic.
- In nice weather, wear a polo instead of a T-shirt if you want to avoid the irritation of an abrasive life jacket on your neck.

WEAR APPROPRIATE FOOTWEAR WITH PALE SOLES
We want to prevent our instructors from polishing more than teaching, so may we ask that you come to the practical class wearing appropriate footwear!
A good boat shoe has an excellent (pale!) non-slip sole that won’t leave black marks if you slip once. So a must to keep everything neat, not to do damage to the boat and of course to ensure your own safety.
PROVIDE WATER (AND POSSIBLY A SNACK)
Definitely do not forget to bring a bottle of water on the boat. Because let’s face it, no one wants to end up at sea like a wilted houseplant! And who knows, you might even need a snack on board. You never know when you might need to fend off a mermaid’s hunger attack!
EXTENSIVE LUNCH?
Training time is already quite short. There’s no time for a 3-course meal! At most of our locations, we do offer the option of eating something small in the afternoon (at your own expense). Not every class location has this option. Exactly one week before the start of your training we will send you an email with all the practical things you need to know. This will also state whether or not you need to provide your own packed lunch.
For multi-day sailing courses, a sandwich lunch is provided.
ALWAYS BE CAREFUL!
VAARSCHOOL BV and its employees are not responsible for any accidents during training practice. Your voluntary participation in this training implies your agreement to this clause.
Only when all students unanimously decide that the course will be cancelled, there may be a rescheduling of date which will be mutually agreed upon. Only the instructor can cancel a session for safety reasons (thunderstorms, storms, etc.). We must at all times try to prevent damage to the vessels. A new date will then be set by mutual agreement.
Multiple-day training planned?
PACK SMART (FOR MULTI-DAY COURSES)
Before you board, remember: pack smart, because there is limited space on board! So, leave those suitcases at home and opt for a handy, compact backpack.
Unless you plan to show the sea how fashion-conscious you are with a floating walk-in-closet. But I don’t think the fish will be impressed with your shoe collection! All you need to provide: Under sheet, sleeping bag, pillowcase, toiletries and possibly earplugs!
HUNGRY?
Breakfast and lunch will be provided on the boat!
Dinner will not be provided on the boat, but in 1 or another cozy restaurant. Our skipper knows enough nice addresses! This dinner is not included in the price.
